What is Zakah?
Zakah is the obigatory charity we pay once a year in order to purify our wealth and our hearts. Our zakah is the minimum amount per year Allah asks us to give to others.
We are only required to pay zakah if the amount of our total assets exceeds our debts.
Why we give Zakah
For many years our beloved guide Sidi encouraged us to give to the poor and the needy. He taught us by his example what it is to sacrifice everything for the Face of Allah, to hear the crying of all who are in need, and to respond by giving what Allah has given us in order to bring mercy to His creation.
Feeding and clothing the poor, giving them shelter and comfort and kindness, is one of the holiest acts of remembering Allah for the seeker. When we care for others as we care for ourselves and we want for others what we want for ourselves, we are truly acting as Sufis. We are seeing an “other” and ourselves and as part of the Divine Unity.
